Almost dinnertime...
I had just put a chicken pie
into the oven to bake...
When Samuel came bursting
When Samuel came bursting
through the back door...
"There's a seal stranded on
"There's a seal stranded on
the ice down in the cove!"
We grabbed our coats and boots
We grabbed our coats and boots
(and, of course, the camera!)
Sure enough,
There, lying on the ice,
was a large seal.
At first,
we were concerned that he
might be hurt...
And we considered calling the warden.
But when he saw us...
He jumped up
and started moving
and appeared to be just fine...
The problem was, you see,
That this big guy was stranded.
He must have come in on the tide...
But, now the tide had gone out
and there was very little water in
the cove under the ice...
So he was stuck.
At first, he tried to go into
the little bit of water that was there...
But, he soon discovered
that there wasn't enough water
to swim down under the ice...
and so he had to return to the top.

He was so beautiful...
And so helpless...
And the ocean seemed very far away...
And he didn't know how to get there.
My son had an idea...
That if we could come up behind him
within a distance, of course,
so as not to scare him...
We might be able to head him
in the right direction.
Well, Joshua's idea worked!
Slowly, he began inching his way,
toward the open water...
And, before long,
we knew there would be no need
for a call to the warden.
As I watched him inch his way
slowly toward home...
I thought of the disciples
and other followers of Jesus...
How they had felt "stranded"
when Christ was put to death
on that seemingly dark day...
You see, they were counting on a king,
A king who would come to defeat
the Romans and restore the kingdom of Israel.
But this was not the intention
of our Lord at this time...
And the disciples felt somewhat abandoned...
How often do we feel stranded?
Not knowing which way to turn?
Not sure of our direction?
Not turning to the One who can
guide us to the Living Water?
Thankfully,
our friend had stayed the course
and found his way back home.
May we all be as fortunate...

they asked of him, saying, Lord,
wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
And he said unto them,
It is not for you to know the times or the seasons,
which the Father hath put in his own power.
But ye shall receive power,
after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:
and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Judaea, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
Acts 1:6-8

Awww isn't he so sweet! :o) How fun that you were able to help him get back on track! ;o) I'm so glad that God has patience for us when we get distracted and become "stranded". He is always there to help guide us back and hold our hand. :o)
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs Laura
ReplyDeleteI love these pictures - that seal looks so sweet! It must be very cold where you live!
My sister and I never get tired of looking at pictures of snow! We've never seen the real thing so it always fascinates us. :)
Thank you again for the lovely comment you left on our blog. :)
God bless you and your family,
Rachel*
Oh, I'm so glad the seal is OK and was able to get back to the water. That was a great idea your son had! Your pictures are great too! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad God is always there guiding us back to the right path when we get stranded and aren't sure which way to go! :)
I hope you're having a lovely week. ♥
Oh, Nabila Grace, you should have seen him! I really didn't want Josh to shoo him back to the water...I just wanted to watch him for awhile! But it was getting late, and we knew that he needed to get back under water. They are truly amazing creatures...it was such a blessing to be able to get so close to him. Once, last summer, we were swimming down in one of the coves, and a porpoise popped his head up! Samuel was able to get really close to him...porpoises tend to be very friendly. Samuel actually got to touch him...which was really fun for him.
ReplyDeleteHope your week is going well...the weekend will be here before we know it!
Love,
Laura
Dear Miss Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting and for your sweet comments. It is still pretty cold up here...especially compared to Africa! Tonight it is supposed to dip below zero...and we are expecting some snow showers Friday...but before we blink our eyes...it will be time for the garden.
I hope that you and your family have a very blessed week!
Mrs. Laura
Dear Melanie,
ReplyDeleteSo nice to have you stop by for a visit. It really was such a treat to see the seal. You really can't tell from the pictures, but he was HUGE! Josh figured that he must have been a full grown adult. At first, he came toward Josh...but then seemed to think again and turned around and headed in the other direction. We often see seals and porpoises in the summer, when we are out in the boat, but they usually don't tend to come ashore too often. Needless to say, life is never dull around here!
Hope you are having a wonderful week!
Love,
Laura
Mom,
ReplyDeleteThat was quite an experience. The seal seamed to be quite tame, but then again I'm not that scary looking so I am sure he didn't feel that threatened by me! As far as the weather is concerned, Maine is definitely a state of extremes. They say "if you don't like the weather in Maine, wait 5 minutes. The summers are beautiful here, which is why everyone comes here for vacation. The winters, on the other hand, can be quite brutal. If you can stand the winters, the summers are great. It is well worth the wait.
Love,
Josh
I love your photos and a glimpse of your life in a very different part of the country than I!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for stopping by! Isn't it amazing the different people we have the opportunity to meet through blogging...such a wonderful blessing, for sure! I hope that you will stop by to visit again!
Have a blessed evening!
